Cricket Captains Report 2015

The GSV cricket season has been a success once again for Lauriston, with wins across the board and one of our three teams making the finals. Boundaries were hit, wickets fell and catches were taken.

The junior teams, consisting of girls from Years 7 and 8 learnt many new skills and improved immensely, with some playing cricket for the first time. Both Lauriston 1 and 2 in the junior division came away with a win, defeating Fintona and Mentone respectively.  They had an impressive season, placing 4th and 5th on the ladder in their zones.

The senior team were zone winners, finishing on top of the ladder and remained undefeated coming into the finals.
The Year 10s and 11s played some strong competitive teams but successfully came away with five wins from five matches within their zone.  What a great effort!  A highlight of the season was in Round 4, when Lauriston put a good score on the board in the first innings before sending Sion in to bat.  We managed to bowl them all out before the end of the sixteen overs (for the first time in the season), with some individual performances of 5 wickets for 6 runs (including a hatrick) and 2 wickets for 3.  Our bowling and batting improved as the matches went on – individually but more importantly as a team.

Lauriston versed Star of the Sea in the semi-finals at Elsternwick Park with gusty and cold conditions making batting tough with the wind blowing in the bowler’s favour.  Star won the toss and sent us in to bat, their accurate and consistent bowling keeping us to a low-scoring innings.  Their attacking performance was equally as impressive, managing to pass our total despite us having very successful bowling performances in the previous weeks.  Star got away with the win in the end, but what a fantastic season we had having an undefeated run into the finals.

Congratulations to everyone who was involved in cricket in Term 4, including the coaches that were always there to help and support us from early in the morning to late in the afternoon.  I have no doubt that each and every girl improved and learnt something more about the sport, no matter how skilled and experienced they were at the start of the season.

Well done Lauriston – I’m sure our successes on the field will continue through to the indoor cricket courts in 2016!
